The beach is Rio's living room

In Rio, the beach isn't a vacation activity; it's daily life. Everyone shares the same sand: surfers and bankers, grandparents and teenagers, families who have claimed the same spot for generations. A day at Ipanema is the quickest way to understand how Brazilians live.

We're dressing it in green and yellow because this is the day we show you Brazil the way Brazilians see it, in the colors that fill every street during the World Cup.

Did you know?

  • The black-and-white wave pattern on Copacabana's promenade came from Lisbon. Landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx made it iconic when he redesigned the seafront around 1970.
  • The beach is divided by lifeguard towers called postos, and each one has its own crowd. Posto 9 in Ipanema is the most famous.
  • 'The Girl from Ipanema' was written about a real girl who walked past a bar on her way to the beach. The bar is now named after the song.
  • Brazil's yellow jersey is nicknamed the Canarinho, the little canary.
